Hotels/Resorts have been hurt by the recent economy.  Here's an idea to generate some new business, and impress your regulars: combine another aspect of the travel industry with yours, offering customers a cheaper and easier way to enjoy their travels.  Typically hotels/resorts have staff (and the concierge), who offer tips on restaurants, sightseeing, etc..  Broaden this, and offer your customers (for a small fee) a much less expensive, and simpler version, of what a travel agency offers; but a more specific and detailed version of what a typical hotel/resort offers.  Allow your customers to go online (or respond to a mailing) and fill out a questionnaire giving their opinions, and comments, on such things as: food likes/dislikes, adventure travel vs. more relaxing travel, their budget, thoughts of a variety of tours within the area, their expected sleep schedule, their hobbies/interests, type of night life they might enjoy, etc. etc..  Make sure the questionnaire is quick to do (multiple choice, and questions requiring one sentence answers), simple to understand, and easy for the client to be as specific as they like.  Also, take time and set up a "coded" system (within your hotel/resort), to aid in reviewing the variety of answers received.  A system that combines the multiple choice answers, with the attitudes and opinions received in the written answers; to give you specifics on what suggestions to make that is easy, and fast enough, to allow almost any employee the ability to review the questionnaire and give these recommendations (keeping costs down by not having to hire and train extra staff).  And, based on the results, present each customer (through email, mail, or in person upon arrival) a few pages worth of..."where to go" and "what to see".  If done well, this is an effective way to showcase not only your hotel/resort, but also tourism within the area.  Customers who may not typically consider staying in your establishment (or traveling to your area) might reconsider, knowing about the easy and potentially cost saving travel feature you offer.  And, if your "system" is consistently updated with new events, activities, etc., will continue to appeal to a variety of clientele: from the wealthy older couple looking for a weekends stay to enjoy the romantic getaways in the area, to a father and son looking to bond over an inexpensive week of free activities and outdoor events.
