For adults and parents, shopping at toy stores can be overwhelming unless guided by a child.  There are so many choices, and children can be picky about what they like, so many people spend extra time looking around.  Here's an idea to make it easier, faster, and more enjoyable for customers along with providing more sales to your store...give people a "purchasing guide" (either using a regularly updated pamphlet or an engaging in-store display).  With the display, set up three sections (a boy's, girl's, and neutral "all kids" section) that include two boards to each section.  Use one board in each, to list around twenty (and a variety) of the popular items your store sells, relating to the children in that section.  Then, on the other board, use a graph where the left side (top to bottom) represents different price ranges, while the top of the graph (left to right) represents different categories of toys sold in your store (i.e.- video games, action figures, ages 5-12, puzzles, preschool toys, electronics, sporting goods, ages 13+, etc etc.).  When matched, the price and category give customers a few options in what to purchase, as well as where the items are located within the store.  Regularly update items you showcase on these boards to help move more inventory.  And keep in mind, that though your trying to appeal to adults, children must also be engaged with these displays or parents will lose interest.  So make sure they are "attention grabbing" for all ages (colorful and lively styling, maybe childlike characters, etc.).  I understand this could be a costly and rather elaborate display for a store to set-up and maintain.  But there are several "payoffs" for the business based on what your providing your customers.  Your giving them a much easier way to shop; and saving them time.  Your also giving them options for several popular toys (which many adults might be clueless about.)  Your targeting and showcasing items throughout your store they may not have considered, or seen, when shopping; which hopefully leads to more purchases.  And, during these tough economic times, your giving them price ranges allowing them to easily set up a budget.  All of these help comfort not only the frustrated parent, but any adult; and make shopping in your establishment a much more welcoming, and enjoyable experience.
